Jay’s arm came across his wife’s shoulders. ‘Fortune-telling, Thea?’ he asked teasingly, his hand at Cassandra’s nape. ‘Perhaps you can tell me whether my book’s going to be any good. I’d be interested to have your opinion.’
‘If what Cass tells me is true, it’s going to be a best-seller,’ said Thea, including them both in her smile. ‘Though I hear from Chris that you’ve got other investments now. Is it true, Cass? Is Jay the new partner in the business?’
‘A sleeping partner,’ put in Jay ruefully, and Cassandra playfully pushed her fist into his ribs.
‘He didn’t tell me, you know,’ she declared. ‘If Chris hadn’t spilled the beans, I’d never have known that Jay had provided the cash backing we so desperately needed.’
‘It was the least I could do,’ averred Jay humorously. ‘In the circumstances.’
Cassandra’s warm colour was appealing, and Thea gave a resigned shake of her head. ‘I suppose when you move to this house in Buckinghamshire, you’ll never be out of the office, Cass.’
‘Oh, no.’ Cassandra was very definite about that. ‘Penny, she’s the girl Chris and Paul took on when I left, is a permanent fixture now. And we’re only moving to Buckinghamshire because Jay has found a house big enough to provide a nursery and guestroom, as well as his study. There’s even a studio for me, over the garage, but although Chris says I can freelance, I don’t think I’ll be spending too much time there during the next few months.’
‘Well, not during the next few weeks anyway,’ agreed Thea firmly. ‘Now, remember, I’ll be back on Thursday, so don’t worry about a thing. David Alexei will be perfectly safe with me.’
‘I’m sure he will.’ Cassandra glanced across the room to where Jay’s mother was proudly displaying her six-week-old grandson to Guy and Helen Conway.
‘I’ve got the reservations, said Jay, with some satisfaction. ‘The plane leaves at twelve o’clock Friday, and we should be in our hotel by early evening local time.’
‘Bermuda,’ sighed Cassandra dreamily. ‘I can hardly believe it.’
‘You will,’ murmured Jay, bestowing an intimate kiss on her parted lips, and Thea turned away, content that she was no longer needed.
